New touchless technology installed in HKIA and MTR

Updated: Aug 24, 2021

No more physical contact with boarding gates and lift buttons at Hong Kong International Airport and MTR

We previously talked about how government buildings are now applying touchless technology to its lifts panels (kNOw Touch) back in August. Now, the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and the MTR are also separately incorporating the touchless concept to its lift panels and buttons.

E-Boarding Gates and lifts

The airport has installed e-Boarding Gates to enable a touchless and seamless departure journey for passengers. You can find the first batch of e-Boarding Gates at departure gate 10 to gate 36 of Terminal 1. Meanwhile, other gates will have the same function consecutively.

HKIA is one of the first airports worldwide to introduce the idea of touchless boarding for passengers at all frontal gates.

Passengers who have verified their documents through facial scans at the e-Security Gates can simply walk past the e-Boarding Gates to board their flight without having to show their documents again.

Meanwhile, touchless lifts are also being trialled at the airport. Sensors are installed on the panels inside and outside the lift. It can detect hand movements without physical touching of the buttons.

Currently, six touchless lifts are available at the airport and all 29 passenger lifts in the terminals will become touchless by the end of 2021.

MTR lifts

Throughout the pandemic, MTR is one of the key factors that keep the city moving. In order to protect the health and safety of passengers and staff, it has implemented a set of hygiene measures using touchless technology.

You can now find lift button sensors at station lifts across the MTR network. Using infrared technology, these sensors allow passengers to use the lift just by waving their hand in front. Currently, these sensors are on 110 lifts in 50 MTR stations.

In addition, MTR has stepped up the cleaning and disinfection of station facilities and trains at regular intervals. Train carriages are sprayed with a specialized coating that will kill germs and bacteria on areas passengers often touch.

Moreover, MTR introduced “Vapourised Hydrogen Peroxide Robots” for deep cleaning stations and trains when necessary.
